Rewiring and knob and tube

Essex, Morris, Sussex, Bergen and Union counties
Licensed, insured and bonded · NJ #19255

Copper Electric rewires older homes and replaces knob and tube wiring across Essex, Morris, Sussex, Bergen and Union counties, licensed, insured and bonded under NJ #19255, with every circuit permitted and inspected.

Knob and tube isn't dangerous just for being old, but age, insulation packed around it and decades of add-ons are what make it risky. And many insurers won't cover a house with it.

Plenty of houses here are old enough to have it, because about a third of Verona's homes and about 43% of South Orange's were built before 1940. It has no ground wire for three-prong outlets and its insulation gets brittle with heat. Many insurers won't write a policy on a house that still has it, so it tends to come up when a house is bought or sold. Steven replaces it with grounded circuits, fishing new wire through the walls where the house allows it.

Find what is live, plan the runs, rewire it, inspect it.

  1. Find what is still live

Steven works out which circuits are still on old wiring and how the house is framed, through the basement, the attic and the panel.

  2. Plan the runs

New circuits are planned through existing cavities wherever the house allows, so walls get small access holes rather than being opened up.

  3. Rewire and inspect

The old circuits are disconnected and replaced with grounded wiring, and the town inspects the work under the permit.

Old wiring questions

Every question here is one people actually ask online, and each answer links to the page it was asked or answered on.

Is knob and tube wiring dangerous?

Not just for being old, but it's obsolete and it gets risky with age. Its insulation gets brittle, insulation packed around the wires traps heat, it has no ground for three-prong appliances, and decades of add-on splices are common. Having a licensed electrician look at what is still live is the place to start.

Is knob and tube wiring illegal in New Jersey, and will insurance cover the house?

Existing knob and tube isn't illegal, but insurance is the real problem. Many insurers won't write or renew a policy on a house that still has it, which is why it usually comes up during a sale. Ask your insurer what it requires before you plan the work.

Will rewiring my old house mean tearing open the walls?

Usually not. Electricians fish new wire through the existing wall and ceiling cavities, often from the basement and attic, so you're left with some small patches rather than open walls. How much depends on how the house is built.
