Lighting installation

Essex, Morris, Sussex, Bergen and Union counties
Licensed, insured and bonded · NJ #19255

Copper Electric installs pendants, chandeliers, recessed, kitchen and outdoor lighting across Essex, Morris, Sussex, Bergen and Union counties, licensed, insured and bonded under NJ #19255, and his Instagram is mostly the lighting he has put up.

A heavy fixture on the wrong box, or an LED on the wrong dimmer, is how a nice light goes wrong. A licensed electrician checks the box, the circuit and the switch first.

Most ceiling boxes are rated for an ordinary fixture, so a chandelier or a big pendant can need a box or a brace that will actually hold it, and a lot of LED flicker comes from a dimmer that was never meant for LEDs. Steven looks at the box, the circuit and the switch before the fixture goes up, so it hangs right and dims right.

Look at the space, check the wiring, hang it, then dial it in.

  1. Talk through the space

Send a photo of the room and the fixture, and Steven talks through where it goes and what the existing wiring and box can handle.

  2. Check the box and the circuit

The ceiling box, the circuit and the switch get checked for the fixture you picked, including whether the dimmer is rated for LED.

  3. Hang it and wire it

The fixture goes up level and wired to code, with a box or brace rated for its weight where it needs one.

  4. Dial it in

Lights on and the dimmer tested through its full range before he calls it done.

Lighting questions

Every question here is one people actually ask online, and each answer links to the page it was asked or answered on.

What is the max weight of a light fixture on a ceiling box?

It depends on the box, and the rating is usually stamped inside it. An ordinary ceiling box is meant for an ordinary fixture, so a heavy chandelier or a large pendant needs a box or brace rated for that weight, and a very heavy fixture may need support tied into the framing rather than the box alone.

Why is my dimmer switch making my recessed lights flicker?

Usually because the dimmer was built for old incandescent bulbs and the LEDs or LED cans on it want a different kind of dimmer, or because the bulbs themselves are not dimmable. Matching the dimmer to the LED load, and checking the connections, is what stops it.

Are ENERGY STAR LED light fixtures worth it?

For fixtures that stay on for hours, like kitchen and outdoor lights, they use far less energy than old incandescent fixtures and last much longer, and certified fixtures are tested for light quality and lifespan. They are a sensible choice whenever a fixture is being replaced anyway.
